How Asphalt is Made?

Asphalt is produced by combining coarse and medium-grained aggregates—such as crushed stone, sand, and gravel—with a black, petroleum-based binder known as bitumen. This mixture, often referred to as asphalt concrete, is applied in multiple layers to create a durable and long-lasting pavement structure:

  • Base Layer – Composed of unbound and bitumen-bound materials placed over the sub-base. It forms a strong foundation to support the upper layers.

Types of Asphalt

  • Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) – A permanent paving solution applied at temperatures between 270°F and 325°F. It must be laid while still hot to ensure proper compaction and durability.

  • MC Cold Mix / Cold Patch – A temporary asphalt solution applied at lower temperatures. Ideal for quick repairs in low-traffic areas, it cures more slowly than hot mix.

  • Warm Mix Asphalt – A permanent solution applied at lower temperatures (typically 30°F to 120°F cooler than HMA). This type extends the paving season and allows materials to be transported over longer distances.

  • Porous Asphalt Mix – Commonly used in driveways, parking lots, sidewalks, and playgrounds. Its permeable design allows water to drain through the surface into a stone bed below, promoting groundwater recharge and reducing surface runoff and puddles.

  • Dense Grade Asphalt – A well-graded hot mix suitable for all layers of pavement. Known for its durability, it performs well under heavy traffic and extreme weather conditions.
